Ms. Marvel First Four Episodes Critical Review:
Ms Marvel is a comic-based series of Disney Plus which is directed by Pakistani Oscar Winner Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy. This is a story of a Pakistani-American teenage girl, Kamala, who loves superheroes and comics. She was an ordinary teenager until she got superpowers and became a superhero herself. Her friends, Nakia and Brunno, are helping her in her journey. She also meets other side characters who love her and supports her.
Though it is a comic and fantasy series, Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy had added realistic elements to it which added value to this series. I am not a big fan of comics and fantasy-based series, but so far I am enjoying Ms Marvel because of the gist of realism this series has
First of all, Kamala's character has been expertly written. The emotions and thoughts of a teenage girl have been portrayed in a realistic way that every teenager can relate to.
Kamala is shown as an obese and brownish girl which has short in height. The negative remarks that she is getting from people around her are pointing toward the so-called beauty standards which our society has created.
Kamala and Nakia's character shows what type of criticism a girl faces and the struggle she has to do in society. Their characters and struggles include female empowerment themes in the series.
The mother-daughter relationship is another realistic element which I love in this series. Expectations of mothers, their criticism and care for daughters have been portrayed beautifully.
The most important theme of this series is the issues of immigrants and the pain through which a nation goes for creating their own identity and having their freedom.
It shows the pain and sacrifices which two nations made in 1947. There are some scenes of that era when Pakistan was immigrating. The fourth episode does contain some scenes of the railway station where the last train to Pakistan was going to leave. It showed how much people were in pain and how difficult those moments were.
This train scene was the last scene of the fourth episode. Let's see what will happen in the fifth episode.
Though I love this series, there are some scenes and elements which I hate in this series. Those scenes and elements are related to the Islamic theme.
This series hasn't portrayed Islam in the right way. Though they are Muslim characters, their thoughts and actions are not Islamic. We can't learn anything about Islam through this series.
In it, we can say that Ms Marvel has portrayed Pakistani culture in the right manner. It has portrayed a typical Pakistani marriage, relatives and gossip which is going on there. It has portrayed a beautiful and cultural part of Karachi. But, this series hasn't portrayed any Islamic theme or element.
We all should keep this fact in mind that Pakistani and Islamic themes are two different things. If you will keep this fact in mind and will watch this series, you will learn about Pakistani culture from it. But, never mix it with Islam.
This is all about the review of the first four episodes of Ms Marvel. Stay Tuned for more reviews.
