Ms Marvel Episode 5 Critical Review- Literary ChitChat
Ms Marvel series is directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy who is an Oscar winner Pakistani. She has always talked about social issues and female empowerment, themes which are present in Ms Marvel too!
Kamala is an American-Pakistani teenager who recently found out that she is Djinn and has special powers. There is a bangle of her great-grandmother, Aisha, which provides her special power. In the fifth episode, she went into the 1940s era when Hindus and Muslims were facing British soldiers' violence and two nations were building.
This episode is full of patriotic moments for Pakistanis. It represents a clear image of that era when Pakistan and India were separating. It represents the issues and pain that Muslims were facing in that era.
Hatred was common and mass bloodshed was going on. Our ancestors have to leave their houses and families behind because of the hatred which was getting common in the two nations- Muslims and Hindus.
The train scene is an epic one! The last train to Pakistan was going to leave and the level of desperation was at its peak. How people were boarding the roofs of trains, how families were getting separated and how much pain was there to leave everything behind.
If their last train leaves, they have to face fearful life and hatred of society, and most probably death. This desperation is the true depiction of 1947 when Pakistan and India were getting separated.
Pakistan and India's 1947 history has been depicted in this single episode.
And do you know what is the most beautiful part of this episode for me?
Aisha selects her family over her tribe!
She built a house, loves her family and gave a huge sacrifice to save her family. It shows the power of women and mothers!
She goes to a large extent to save her husband and children.
In the previous episodes, we have seen that society negatively thinks about her. Without knowing her story, they assume things and say them loudly. She is a topic of gossip for society who is depicting her in a negative light. But, this episode tells that she is the real hero of Ms Marvel!
This episode has two main lessons for us!
Do remember the past and sacrifices of your ancestors! Never forget how much pain our ancestors endured for our futures. Respect your ancestors and be proud of your heritage.
Never assume things on your own. You don't know the whole story so don't discuss it for the sake of gossip. This is the root problem of our society. It spreads hatred and negativity in our society.
Because of this hatred gossip, Kamala's grandmother and mother suffered in their lives. It portrays that our negative remarks and gossip play a huge role in female oppression in our society.
